Abstract

Meat and meat products constitute some of the most important foods in western societies. However, the area of meat biotechnology is not as comprehensively covered as other areas of food biotechnology. Missing from this area are the recent developments for better sensory and nutritional quality as well as improved safety. The main goal of this book is to provide the reader with the recent developments in biotechnology and their applications in the meat processing chain. To achieve this goal, the book is divided into four parts. The first part deals with the use of modern biotechnology applied to farm animals. The second part focuses on the recent biotechnological developments in starter cultures for better meat fermentation. The third part discusses current approaches to improve the quality and nutritional properties of meats. The final part presents the latest advances in protection against foodborne pathogens, and other recent trends in the field. Written by distinguished international contributors, this book brings together the advances in such varied and different biotechnological topics.

Abstract

In this book, Higher Order Statistical (HOS) theory is used to develop indices for detecting and quantifying signal non-Gaussianity and nonlinearity. These indices, together with specific patterns in the mapping of process output and controller output are used to diagnose the causes of poor control loop performance. Often valve stiction is the main cause of poor control performance. A generalized definition of valve stiction based on the investigation of real plant data is proposed. A simple data-driven model of valve stiction is developed. The model is simple, yet powerful enough to properly simulate the complex valve stiction phenomena. Both open and closed loop results have been presented and validated to show the capability of the model. Conventional invasive methods such as the valve travel test can detect stiction easily. However, they are expensive, time consuming and tedious to use for examining thousands of valves in a typical process industry. A non-invasive method that can simultaneously detect and quantify control valve stiction is presented. The method requires only routine operating data from the process. Over a dozen industrial case studies have demonstrated the wide applicability and practicality of this method. In chemical industrial practice, data are often compressed for archival purposes, using various techniques. Compression degrades data quality and induces nonlinearity in the data. The issues of data quality degradation and nonlinearity induction due to compression are investigated in this book. An automatic method for detection and quantification of the compression present in the archived data is discussed. Compelling and quantitative analyses have been recommended to end the practice of process data compression.

Abstract

Time-to-event data are ubiquitous in fields such as medicine, biology, demography, sociology, economics and reliability theory. Recently, a need to analyze more complex event histories has emerged. Examples are individuals that move among several states, frailty that makes some units fail before others, internal time-dependent covariates, and the estimation of causal effects from observational data. The aim of this book is to bridge the gap between standard textbook models and a range of models where the dynamic structure of the data manifests itself fully. The common denominator of such models is stochastic processes. The authors show how counting processes, martingales, and stochastic integrals fit very nicely with censored data. Beginning with standard analyses such as Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox regression, the presentation progresses to the additive hazard model and recurrent event data. Stochastic processes are also used as natural models for individual frailty; they allow sensible interpretations of a number of surprising artifacts seen in population data. The stochastic process framework is naturally connected to causality. The authors show how dynamic path analyses can incorporate many modern causality ideas in a framework that takes the time aspect seriously. To make the material accessible to the reader, a large number of practical examples, mainly from medicine, are developed in detail. Stochastic processes are introduced in an intuitive and non-technical manner. The book is aimed at investigators who use event history methods and want a better understanding of the statistical concepts. It is suitable as a textbook for graduate courses in statistics and biostatistics. Odd O. Aalen is professor of medical statistics at the University of Oslo, Norway. His Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 introduced counting processes and martingales in event history analysis. He has also contributed to numerous other areas of event history analysis, such as additive hazards regression, frailty, and causality through dynamic modeling. Ørnulf Borgan is professor of statistics at the University of Oslo, Norway. Since his Ph.D. in 1984 he has contributed extensively to event history analysis. He is co-author of the monograph Statistical Models Based on Counting Processes, and is editor of Scandinavian Journal of Statistics. Håkon K. Gjessing is professor of medical statistics at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the University of Bergen, Norway. Since his Ph.D. in probability in 1995, he has worked on a broad range of theoretical and applied problems in biostatistics.

Abstract

Emerging Nanotechnologies: Test, Defect Tolerance and Reliability covers various technologies that have been developing over the last decades such as chemically assembled electronic nanotechnology, Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA), and nanowires and carbon nanotubes. Each of these technologies offers various advantages and disadvantages. Some suffer from high power, some work in very low temperatures and some others need indeterministic bottom-up assembly. These emerging technologies are not considered as a direct replacement for CMOS technology and may require a completely new architecture to achieve their functionality. Emerging Nanotechnologies: Test, Defect Tolerance and Reliability brings all of these issues together in one place for readers and researchers who are interested in this rapidly changing field.

Abstract

Pipes are of major importance for transport of liquids and gas mainly for water, natural gas and oil. The total length of gas pipes in the world is estimated at one million kilometres for gas transport (pipes with a diameter of 80 to 1000 mm). Pipelines remain the least expensive transcontinental mean of transport compared to rail-bound or terrestrial transport. It has become increasingly paramount to ensure the safe utilisation of such plant in order to prevent economical, social and ecological losses. From a technical point of view, pipelines are complicated three dimensional structures that include straight pipes, nozzles, pipe-bends, dissimilar welded joints, etc. In addition, their operating conditions can be quite severe, that is, internal pressure and cyclic loading (vibration) combined with the influence of internal and external corrosive environments. The external defects, e.g., corrosion defects, gouge, foreign object scratches, and pipeline erection activities are major failure reasons of gas pipelines. All these types of defects and associated failure are described. Leak and fracture of pipes is assumed to be done by initiation and propagation of defect and final failure when defect has reached a critical length. In this book, the three two major defect assessment tools for pipes are presented : i) the failure assessment diagram and particularly the SINTAP procedure, ii) limit analysis, iii) strain design approach Methods of defect repair are based on investigation findings. Methods such as welded sleeve, repair clamp composite sleeve, grinding, pipe replacement are described.

Abstract

Risks in a changing and global world are complex and interconnected, even more so in a globalized world consisting of many societies at very different levels of development. Work life is strongly influenced by all forms of globalization - for example, the growing gap between rich and poor; demographic transition towards ageing or very young societies; growing mobility of people; the rapid diffusion of new technologies and a variety of working and environmental conditions in highly industrialized and developing countries; let alone rapidly changing economic structures including new types of enterprises and occupations. Good governance for handling occupational safety, population health and environmental quality has become one of the decisive criteria for ensuring competitive business structures, quality performance and high motivation by workers, excellent conditions of public health and societal well-being and functioning of corporate and community policies and services. Furthermore, risk governance is crucial for sustainable development, the preservation of diverse life styles, and social cohesion. Social networks, cultural and religious as well as political and media environments benefit from a system in which threats to safety, health and the environment are well taken care of. Occupational safety and health is an important public good, and a prerequisite for effective and enduring social security systems. The main goal of this book is to make the reader familiar with the complexity and multi-dimensionality of the subject RISK, focusing on the changing character of work in a globalised economy. The main emphasis is on providing practical guidelines for improved risk governance, i.e., how to find adequate solutions through integrated methods of risk assessment, risk handling and risk communication for the benefit of everyone: employers, workers, other stakeholders as well as shareholders and society at large.
